By the end of the book Wiesel has lost his belief in God. If there is a God, how could he allow this to happen, he wonders. As the days go by, there are frequent selections. A man with a little stick decides who will live and who will die. This man acts like God. To the right you live, to the left, you die. As Wiesel watches the evil that exists, his belief in the existence of God continues to deteriorate. Wiesel asks, ââ¬Å"Where is my God? Where is He? â⬠(61) Wiesel continues to witness hangings, beatings, starvation, and torture. One day when Wiesel comes back from a day s work, he sees three gallows being assembled. The whole camp has to witness the hangings. Among the 3 people who would die that day, was a young child. Wiesel wondered what that poor innocent boy had done to deserve to die in this manner. Wiesel watched the boy struggling between life and death. The death was a slow agony. At this point Wiesel lost all faith in the existence of God. ââ¬Å"Where is God now? Where is He? Here is ââ¬â He is hanging here on this gallowsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (62) After this incident Wiesel could no longer believe in God. He felt that no one could believe in God when one saw innocent children die such terrible deaths. The first arguments to look at between the Pc and Mac platform has to do with hardware configuration. Before Windows 95, installing and configuring hardware was like pulling teeth. The instructions given to help install hardware were too complicated for the average user. There was also the issuer of compatibility between the large number of different hardware setups available in the PC world. Is a particular board going to work with my PC? With Windows 95, these problems were alleviated with plug and play technology. With plug and play compatible boards, the computer detects and configures the new board automatically. The operating system may recognize some hardware components on older PCs. Mac userw will claim that they always had the convenicnce of a plug and play system, ubt the difference shows in teh flexibility of the two systems. Another set of arguments Mac users use in favor of their sysstems over PCs is in multimedia and networking capabilities. Mac users gloat that the Mac has networking technology built in the system. Even if a user did not use it, the network is included with the system. They cited that for the PC users and Pc users hate the fact that they need to stick a card in their computers to communicate with any other computer. With Windows 95, the Mac network gloaters are silenced. Windows 95 included built-in network support. Any network will work properly. The Mac users also claim their systems have speech, telephony, and voice recognition, whereas the Pc user does not have. In truth, the promised building blocks for telephony control do not yet exist. I think the speech is not good point in the Mac. In the world of computer, people cannot stand still for too long without getting passed by. Windows 95 now threatens the only assets the Mac has in capturing the interests of the consumers because of configuration in the hardware, communication betweencomputers and difference of operating systems in both platforms. These are the celebrities that people around the world are copying; they are gifted people who at the same time are morally bankrupt. Divorce scenes had become a norm in the celebrity world. Even the celebrities in Malaysia also got influenced by the west countries. Divorce had become an issue to attract the attention of the public and these, which not surprisingly will create a scene that influences the world. Do this behavior that we are looking for to fit in our culture for the next generations? The biggest fear may soon be realized: a generation of Mini Mileys all grown up. Slim girls in blond wigs walking around chomping on gum and talking with a Southern twang. Also the brilliant pop star, Madonna that educate people about bisexuality had become a worry as she also popped out the issue to made the female body a working machine like she is now, muscular. Way too muscular. Maybe people arenââ¬â¢t looking to celebrities to learn how to behave, but actually learn how not to behave. Maybe watching Lindsay Lohan wither away to nothing isnââ¬â¢t inspiring kids to diet, but rather showing the world of impressionable kids that itââ¬â¢s not cute to skip a meal every day for a month. Itââ¬â¢s all up to the way of people accepting things. Maybe some of the scenes are normal in the west countries. But do we in Asia? Or a smaller scope, Malaysia? Sexy outfits that had been worn by our artists had become a big issue especially the Muslims as these doesnââ¬â¢t fit in the culture of an Islamic country. He said it costs nothing to be just. The basis of Thoreauââ¬â¢s political thinking came from his ââ¬Å"Civil Disobedienceâ⬠essay where he advocates for people to assert their cit izensââ¬â¢ rights against a government which they think has become unjust, that the best government is a government that governs the least. Resistance to government can be justified if following it is unconscionable; additionally, strong individuals can take action on their own if they will think their government is uncaring, unwieldy, too big, or even abusive or repressive. An example of this individualistic attitude was Captain Brown, who saw it fit to take action on his own to end slavery, but Thoreau did not want anarchy but only a better government (Thoreau 2). The moral philosophy of Thoreau also influenced the political ideas of Mohandas Karamchand (Mahatma) Gandhi in his uphill struggle against British colonial rule in India. In particular, the strategies used by Gandhi were based on Thoreau's moral civil disobedience. This is a focal point in Gandhi's fight because it gave him and his followers the moral high ground. Gandhi was a lawyer, and he knew there were many insta nces in which laws can be immoral. MIDI for beginners Background The acronym MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. A Musical Instrument is a machine that makes sounds which humans have decided to call music. Digital means information that is encoded in numerical form, i.e. numbers, while Interface means a machine which facilitates communication between two or more systems. In practical terms, MIDI is a standard way for all sorts of modern musical equipment to talk to each other. This equipment commonly consists of things like keyboards, computer sequencers, synthesisers, and samplers, but it also includes mixers, tape recorders, effects generators, guitars, drum kits, wind instruments etc. The MIDI Standard was designed in the early 80's by a partnership between Roland and Sequential Circuits, two of the largest synthesiser manufactures of the time. This came about because of pressure from keyboard players, who wanted a universal interface standard for all their synthesisers to comply to. They were fed up with different synthesiser corporations using their own communications standard which were incompatible with those of other corporations. After the publication of the MIDI standard in 1984, other musical equipment manufactures quickly began to implement it in the designs of their products and MIDI became a world wide standard. A major advantage of MIDI over old analogue interface standards, such as CV (Control Voltage), is that it is possible to transfer up to sixteen channels of data down one cable, as opposed to CV's one channel per cable. Another major advantage of MIDI is that it enables computers equipped with MIDI to be used to write music and control musical equipment. This is done with programs called sequencers. They can give a very high degree of control over music, impossible through conventional means. Another advantage of MIDI is that it is now a world wide standard, insuring that practically all professional electronic music equipment will be compatible with it. Having sixteen channels to transfer MIDI data can also be a limitation when you want to use more than sixteen channels. However, this problem can be got around by using two or more midi interfaces each giving sixteen channels. Another limitation of MIDI is that you can not use it to transfer real time digital audio. MIDI information is transferred by sending a digital signal down a wire from one system to another. This digital data takes the form of binary numbers, physically transferred by sending zero volts for zero or off and plus five volts for one or on. We were definitely at the center of the universe, and that was fun. There was nothing that was impossibleâ⬠(p. 192) The microcomputer revolution was a trend of his time that created his opportunity. ââ¬Å"It was very early on. There were no PCs. The microprocessor idea had Just gotten going, and they were 4-bit microprocessorsâ⬠that was state of the art.Designs were all basically custom hardware designs, so it was very different. I was involved in chip design at that point. That felt like roc ket science. Trying to draw the audience in to the world of the movie is not always beneficial, however. There are times when as a film maker one wants the audience to be aware of the story as a story ââ¬â and non diegetic sound is a way to accomplish this. In Hairspray, the filmmakers went to extraordinary lengths to make much of the sound in the movie diegetic, trying to deflect the audiences attention from the artifice of spontaneous song and dance, while the film Forest Gump goes the opposite direction, using non-diegetic sound to draw the viewerââ¬â¢s attention to the artifice of the story, such as having a teller with biases and skewed perceptions. Musicals can sometimes struggle significantly with the transition into song and dance. It can sometimes simply be incredibly jarring for people to switch from normal dialogue ââ¬â which we see every day in the world around us, to excellently choreographed dance accompanied by song that is so well performed that it clearly comes from a professional. Some musicals embrace this moment of awkwardness, using winks and nods at the audience to make emphasize and make light of the awkwardness of the transition; Hairspray, however, by making many of the songs diegetic, goes the opposite direction and tries to make the song and dance seem natural rather than out of place. This practice pervades the movie, starting with one of the opening scenes: the first song occurs on ââ¬Å"the Corny Collins Showâ⬠a professional musical television event. Obviously in that case, singing and dancing makes perfect sense ââ¬â as it does when the girls sing along at home. A viewer can even stretch their imagination to believing that, inspired by this show, a talented girl could begin singing about her life. This patter n continues throughout the film, first with song inserted into detention by students who are bored, then later by setting dance numbers in a record store, or again on a television set several times. Throughout this entire film, the directors made every effort to make all of the music diegetic. This process breaks down the divide between the viewer and the action occurring on screen. It makes it easier for viewers to suspend disbelief, as the ââ¬Ëphysicsââ¬â¢ in the world on screen correspond to the ââ¬Ëphysicsââ¬â¢ in the world around us ââ¬â sometimes there is music, and that music has a known source, one can identify it, and sometimes people sing and dance do it. All of this breaks down the artifice of the story and tries to blur the lines between the world of the screen and the world around the viewer. While Hairspray makes frequent use of diegetic sound in order to break down the artifice of storytelling and creates many reasons for the song and dance that occurs , Forrest Gump goes in the complete opposite direction, using the narration ââ¬â (mostly) nondiegetic sound ââ¬â as a driving force of the plot and thus emphasizing the artifice of storytelling inherent to film (there are a few occurrences where the narration is diegetic in that

Therefore, performing both tasks at the same time is subjecting the brain to impossibilities and endangering other road usersââ¬â¢ lives. The Death of Ivan Ilyich Essay -- Literary Analysis, Tolstoy
In his novella, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Leo Tolstoy satirizes the isolation and materialism of Russian society and suggests that its desensitized existence overlooks the true meaning of lifeââ¬âcompassion. Ivan had attained everything that society deemed important in life: a high social position, a powerful job, and money. Marriage developed out of necessity rather than love: ââ¬Å"He only required of it those conveniencesââ¬âdinner at home, housewife, and bedââ¬âwhich it could give himâ⬠(17). Later, he purchased a magnificent house, as society dictated, and attempted to fill it with ostentatious antiquities solely available to the wealthy. However, ââ¬Å"In reality it was just what is usually seen in the houses of people of moderate means who want to appear rich, and therefore succeed only in resembling others like themselvesâ⬠(22). Through intense characterizations by the detached and omniscient narrator, Tolstoy reveals the flaws of this deeply superfic ial society. Although Ivan has flourished under the standards of society, he fails to establish any sort of connection with another human being on this earth. Tragically, only his fatal illness can allow him to confront his own death and reevaluate his life. He finally understands, in his final breath, that ââ¬Å"All you have lived for and still live for is falsehood and deception, hiding life and death from youâ⬠(69). Tolstoy establishes his satire instantly after the death of Ivan through the cruel and selfish reactions of his friends. The death of a friend would normally conjure feelings of grief and compassion, yet for Ivanââ¬â¢s close associates, thoughts of their futures drowned out any thoughts of death. ââ¬Å"So on receiving the news of Ivan Ilych's death the first thought of each of the gentlemen in ... ...nt factors in an individualââ¬â¢s life. Tolstoy suggests that even though most of Russian society has lived similar to Ivan, an opportunity will always exist to redeem oneself of his past greed. In his eyes, the Russian nobility did not actually live since their sole priorities were themselves and obtaining possessions. While the poor, on the other hand, understood the importance of their time on this earth and seized every second of it. Although written in the late nineteenth century, Tolstoyââ¬â¢s work continues to apply to American society even today. The student's excuses may or may not have to do with an illness. An absentee problem should be considered chronic when it is not always related to a specific illness and involves an average of two days or more per month. Once cause of chronic absenteeism is a lack of initiative on the part of the parents. It's not uncommon to find children absent from school because their parents did not get them up and out the door. In some cases, children may be kept home to take care of a parent or sibling who is not feeling well. Chronic absenteeism is often a family problem. When one child is absent, so are his or her brothers and sisters. Chronic absenteeism can also occur if parents are easily fooled into thinking the student is sick. Some parents are unable to determine whether their child is sick or not and, therefore, let the child stay home at the slightest complaint. Staying home and watching TV can be very reinforcing to some students. Chronic absenteeism may also occur if the classroom atmosphere is not reinforcing or is threatening to the child. If the student is nervous or anxious about the classroom, he or she may try to avoid coming to school. This factor is usually combined with one of the other causes discussed above. Sometimes, the very young child will use illness as a means of avoiding what he or she thinks may be a new and frightening experience. (Make sure that you follow distinct guidelines in making arrangements for a physical examination. ) Request the school nurse or physician to give the parents some guidelines for evaluating whether the student has an illness that justifies being absent from school as often as has been the case. Step 3: Discuss the problem with the student's parents. Be sure to provide them with a record of their child's absences. Parents often have no idea how frequently their child has missed school. Let them know that you only wish to help and that you share their concern for their child's welfare in school. Determine whether the student's problem is the result of the parents not being able to tell whether the child is fooling them. Point out that it's sometimes difficult to tell whether someone is sick fist thing in the morning. If the parents have discussed the problem with a nurse or doctor, suggest that they follow the guidelines that were given to them by the professional. Tell the parents that it's fine to send the child to school when they are unsure about health complaints. Reassure them that you will send the child home if he or she is actually sick. In addition, you can suggest to the parent that if the child is kept at home, he should be kept in bed all day. Reinforce the idea that sick time requires rest time. (Sometimes the child will learn to determine whether he is sick or not with this procedure alone. ) Determine whether the student's problem is the result of parents not caring whether the child is in school. If so, be understanding of the parents. They may have had negative experiences in school. Let them know that you are there to help their child learn but that you cannot be effective unless the child is in school. Some parents may assume that the elementary school day is composed mostly of play. Let the parents know that this is not the case and that what the student learns each day and each year in school will help determine his or her future success. Sometimes just knowing you care will make a difference in the parents' attitude. If the child's attendance improves, be sure to follow up with periodic notes or phone calls to the parents to voice your appreciation to their assistance. Step 4: Discuss the problem with the student. Be very frank with the student about the severity of the problem. Show the student his or her attendance records. Let the student know that continued absences will make it more and more difficult for him or her to keep up with the other students. If the student can't tell how he or she feels in the morning, tell the student to come to school anyway. Tell the student that you will send the student home if he or she is really sick. If the student is chronically absent because the parents do not bother getting him or her up and ready, discuss ways the student can do this for himself or herself. Consider having the student do some work around the school to earn an alarm clock. (Check with your principal to see whether there is money available for purchasing a clock. ) Work with the student on how to get up and get ready for school. (This will be a time-consuming procedure for you, especially if the student is young. So don't do this step unless you think you can motivate the student to make the effort. ) Be sure to greet the student warmly each morning that he or she comes to school. Step 5: Make your classroom a positive and exciting place to be. Reassure the student that the student has a secure place in your class and that you like having him or her there. When the student is in class, keep the student active and challenged so that he or she will not want to miss something by not being there. An increase in positive interactions will do much to improve the environment in your classroom. Step 6: If you've followed district procedure and all of the steps that are suggested in this solution sheet but without success, do the best job you can with the student when he or she is there. Try not to worry about the problem, and don't feel guilty. When you've done everything in your power to get the student to school, don't blame yourself if the problem persists. Keep yourself open to the possibility of other solutions, but don't let the problem interfere with your effectiveness with the students who are in school everyday Hb2 Chronic absenteeism of young students often overlooked This term refers to truants, but also includes students in the elementary grades who have excused absences due to illness, family problems, or other reasons. The National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP) defines a chronically absent student as one who misses 10 percent or more of the school year, regardless of whether an absence is excused or not. Many causes The NCCP cites a number of factors that can contribute to high levels of absenteeism among young children, including poor communication with parents, insufficient monitoring of attendance, high mobility, parents who donââ¬â¢t value education or feel welcome in school, poverty, and high levels of violence in the community. A recent report by the Open Society Institute-Baltimore, Missing School: The Epidemic of School Absence, notes that people tend to blame individuals ââ¬â ââ¬Å"neglectful parents and/or lazy, undisciplined youthsâ⬠ââ¬â when students donââ¬â¢t attend school. But it found school district policies have also ââ¬Å"contributed unintentionally to the wide-spread problem of poor school attendance in Baltimore,â⬠where 34 percent of elementary students and 44 percent of high school students were chronically absent in 2006-07 school year. These include weak and indifferent attendance policies and practices, including lack of follow-up with parents. And because frequently absent students tend to have low academic performance, the exclusive use of standardized test scores to measure school effectiveness offers schools little incentive for encouraging attendance. Hb3 Student Absenteeism ââ¬â Whatââ¬â¢s the Problem ââ¬â andà theà Answer? Student absenteeism is a serious issue in public education. Concerted efforts have been expended aimed at engaging students and promoting active learning, but schools are still full ofà ââ¬Å"clock-watchersâ⬠à Many high schoolers regularly skip classes and, according to some inside reports, ââ¬Å"the hallways are virtually empty some Friday afternoons. Whatââ¬â¢s my initial response? When confronted with a growing problem of absenteeism, Nova Scotia Education seems to be considering ââ¬Å"compulsory engagementâ⬠until age 18. With 7. 4% of students missing 20% or more of classes and 45% absent for 10% of their classes, itââ¬â¢s a deeply entrenched problem. Canadaââ¬â¢s largest national school survey,à Tell Them from Me, provided a clearer sense of the problem and identified the factors contributing to ââ¬Å"a sense of belonging at school. â⬠à ââ¬Å"Improving school and classroom climateâ⬠are key to ââ¬Å"increasing engagement,â⬠says CRISP Director Douglas Willms (MASS Journal,Fall 2008). Leading American expert, Deborah Meier (2002), sees school size as a critical factor ââ¬â the smaller the school, the more likely students are to feel a sense ofà attachment; the larger the school, the greater the potential for standardization, alienation and absenteeism. Hb4 Health woes cause drop-out, absenteeism ââ¬â DepEd study Health problems are the leading causes of drop-out and absenteeism among public school students today, according to the Nationwide Oral Health Survey (NOHS), a study conducted by the Department of Education (DepEd), citing that of all health-related infliction, 97 percent involves tooth decay. In order to reduce school drop-out and absenteeism, DepEd intensifies its Essential Health Care Program (EHCP) and targets the leading cause of absenteeism by promoting proper oral care habits among students. The EHCP is a school-based program of DepEd and allocates simple and doable programs like daily hand washing, tooth brushing, bi-annual de-worming, among others. We hope to improve studentsââ¬â¢ health thus also upgrade their academic performance,â⬠Education Undersecretary for Programs and Projects Vilma Labrador said. Together with Lamoiyan Corporation and Philippine Dental Association (PDA), DepED launched the Happ y Smiles for Healthy Kids project Wednesday, targeting thousands of preschool pupils nationwide. The special project falls under the education departmentââ¬â¢s EHCP. The launch was held at Bagong Ilog Elementary School in Pasig City. The project will provide each pupil with one soap and one toothbrush and access to toothpaste, which will be provided by Lamoiyan Corporation. Each package costs P25. 00 per child for the entire school year. PDA, on the other hand, will also provide oral education and oral examination to 86 different schools nationwide. PDA is composed of 156 licensed dentists involved in the development of workable oral health programs in public elementary schools and communities. Most importantly, DepEd along with their partners urged teachers to lead its students in practicing proper hygiene. ââ¬Å"Teachers have the responsibility, not only in developing their studentsââ¬â¢ minds but also good habits especially oral care,â⬠Lamoiyan Corporation president and CEO Cecilio Pedro said. Hb5 Hb6 Studentââ¬â¢s excessive absenteeism should have prompted action by the school district to respond to attendance issues. Springfield School Committee v. Doe, 53 IDELR 158 (D. Mass. 009): A school district has an affirmative duty to take responsive action to a studentââ¬â¢s chronic absenteeism, even when there is no ââ¬Å"particularized showing of lack of progress or loss of education benefit attributable to [the school districtââ¬â¢s] failure to respondâ⬠to the studentââ¬â¢s absenteeism. In this case, the student had cognitive, attention, and behavioral issues (plus a history of poor attendance) and was absent in excess of thirty-two (32) days ov er a period of just two months. Also, one of the goals of the studentââ¬â¢s IEP was to improve his handling of school responsibilities, which was ââ¬Å"grounded inâ⬠the studentââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"often being late and walking out of class, among other serious performance problems. â⬠Although there was no specific indication of any loss of educational benefit due to this chronic absenteeism, there was also no indication that a representative from the schoolââ¬â¢s Educational Team contacted the student or his guardian to determine the cause of the studentââ¬â¢s absences. This failure was ââ¬Å"reason enough for the hearing officer to conclude that he had been denied a FAPE. à The Court noted that ââ¬Å"for the hearing officer to have found otherwiseâ⬠in light of such circumstances, it ââ¬Å"would only encourage school districts to ignore such problems in the hope that no lasting damage will ensue. â⬠Notably, the Court stated that it would not establish a set number of days of absen ce or truancy that would trigger a school districtââ¬â¢s obligation to determine how to provide a FAPE. Rather, ââ¬Å"each studentââ¬â¢s case must turn on its own facts. â⬠Hb7 The Effects of Excessive Absenteeism in Schools Students who skip school a lot miss out on the opportunity to gain a quality education, while teachers who are often absence may hurt the students' chances by weakening the school's ability to function. Students without adequate parental supervision may skip school to escape the boredom or cope with depression, according to author Linda L. Williams. Others stay away from class because of feelings of disconnectedness and inadequacy. Disconnected to School * Students who are frequently absent from school have more difficulty forming relationships and participating in school activities. Students with excessive absences may feel disconnected from academics and believe that the lessons are not relevant to their lives. They may spend less time in extracurricular activities, which reduces their chances to discover their passion, gain recognition for their talent and develop their skills outside the classroom. Disconnected student lack accountability which can lead to behavioral issues and poor academic achievement. Teachers who are frequently absent may not be able to bond with students. As a result students are more likely to disregard lessons and take school less seriously. Compromised Learning * Excessive absences create gaps in the student's education. Lesson plans are designed to prepare students for the next lesson. However if the student is not present in the classroom for the teacher to help them, the student has a higher chance of being left behind. Due to frequent absences, students may forget the previous lessons which results academic insecurity. Students may be doubt their ability to excel academically and stop putting in the effort to achieve high grades. If teachers have excessive absences, the learning process of the students becomes disrupted. Instead of challenging lessons, students are given busy work from less qualified substitute teachers. Lack of Positive Social Support * Constructive support from teachers and peers can boost a student's confidence in academics and encourage her to work towards academic success. Many students with excessive absences are dealing with difficult financial, health or family situations. However, without the chance to gain support from teachers, the student may not receive the extra attention she needs. Students who are exposed to negative attitudes about school will not have to chance to befriend students that excel academically. Teachers who are frequently absent are less able to join a strong network of teachers and gain the support of administration. This can lead to further clashes, organizational issues, conflicts and divisions within the school. Strained School Budgets * Student and teacher absences put a heavy burden on the school budget. Money that could be invested in field trips, technology and extracurricular activities are instead wasted on the cost of absences. Research in 1998 by PhoneMaster systems found that Oakland (CA) Unified School District suffered a loss of $4 million from student absences. To reduce the budget strain and improve the quality of education, teachers with excessive absenteeism are targeted for removal. Many schools are feeling pressure from officials to reduce budget costs by enforcing attendance. As a result frequently absent teachers are vulnerable to lay offs and dismissals. Hb8 Absebteeism and Lateness Among Secondary School Students in Nigeria:Profiling Causes and Solution Introduction Absenteeism is major and continuous administrative problem among secondary school students in developing countries. Since the problem is to 70% student home based, there is need for the student/parent to help identify and proffer solutions to this quality disturbing problems that could lead to studentsââ¬â¢ dropout from school. Ubogu (2004:25) identified illness, permitted leave, voluntary absenteeism, as common forms of absenteeism. Identified causes of absenteeism include: illness, financial hardship, age, social class, geographical area, truancy and institutional influence. School related factors, such as; teachersââ¬â¢ attitude, poor administration, high cost of education, illness due to weather condition such as cold, temperature rey days causes absenteeism among students. Harsh school rules and regulations could cause absenteeism i. e. corporal punishment; families where children prepare themselves for school and parent to work. Truancy among students is caused by school-related reasons. Bullied by school staff, boredom, dislike of teachers and avoidance of tests. These are without par entsââ¬â¢ knowledge (Susan Kirk 2003). School authorities authorized absence for ailments, medical and death in the family. Parent particularly in rural areas keep their children at home for domestic activities on market and community festival days . In crises areas, student absence from school for safety reasons. Unaccepted absence had a negative effect on peer relationship, which could cause absence. According to Malcolm, Wilson, Davidson and Kirk (2003) teachers identified effects of absenteeism on children are; academic underachievement which increases costs and wastage, difficulty in making friends which could lead to boredom, loss of confidence and engagement in premature sexual activity which could lead to pregnancy resulting in dropout and stress among young careers. The society suffers as the children of school age hang around in the streets, intimidating other people and stealing properties of those who are in school and other place of work. Absenteeism and lateness could be reduced by providing; free education, counseling, discipline relevant curriculum and social welfare seminal to studentsââ¬â¢ . The use of electronic registration systems, truancy sweeps, contact with parents, and support for pupils with poor attendance and effective school administration by principals. Davidson et al 2003) (Ubogun 2004: 160). Absenteeism could results into poor academic achievement, lost of friends and partners, disruption in class when absentees return affect the behavior of other students, difficulty in keeping accurate records, reduced ability to meet instructional targets and damaged school reputation. For school community positive relationship to commune in the administration of secondary schools, there is need to identify causes of absenteeism and lateness among secondary schools in Nigeria (Oghuvbu 2002). Discussion The study revealed poor condition of health, lack of transportation parent poor financial condition, inability of parent to provide instructional materials and teachers non-commitment to the teaching of their subjects as causes of absenteeism. Going late to bed because of watching films and home movies, resulting into wake up late in the morning, distance to school and keeping friends who are not students are causes of lateness among secondary school students in Nigeria. These findings are consistent with those of Ubogu (2004), Heather Malcolm, Valerie Wilson, Julia Davidson and Susan Kirk (2003). Identified solutions to the causes of absenteeism and lateness were teachers should be punctual and regular in school, activities of Senior and Junior students should be supervised by teachers, parents should check their children in school regularly, library faculties should be provided in school to engage students during their free periods and punishment should be given to students involved in continuous absenteeism and lateness by school administrators. The result of this study showed that both the school authority and parents are involved in the factor that generatesabsenteeism and lateness among students. There is no significant difference between the views of principals, teachers, parents and students in the identified causes and possible solutions to the problems of absenteeism and lateness among secondary school students in Nigeria as revealed in this study. Also the causes of absenteeism are not significantly related to causes of lateness. The study revealed that only 2. 4% of the causes of lateness influences absenteeism that is students are not absent from school because of distance wake up late or keeping friends who are not students. However, poor parent financial status could result to lateness and absenteeism. The finding of this study could help reduce the problems of absenteeism and lateness since the four groups involved in the creation, management and control of these problems have no significant difference in the id entification of causes and possible solutions to these structural quality and societal disturbing problem, which affects the educational system in Nigeria.
